In Beltrán’s article, she explores the empowerment and
exploitation surround Lopez’s star image and the way that Lopez’ butt indicates
of both this history of hyper-sexualizing nonwhite women and a Latina cultural
heritage of diverse body types. Beltrán references Dyer a few times in her
article, which makes sense since her exploration of Lopez’s star image relates
to what we talked about earlier in the semester about the contradictions
present within star images. One interesting thing about the way that this
article presented Lopez is the way that Lopez’s own commentary on her image was
included in the discussion of her image. She seemed actively aware of the
contexts in which she was appearing. The article ultimately concluded with her
focusing on the positive aspects of her image rather than the negative, which I
thought was a nice thing to focus on, though I did wonder if part of her acceptance
of this image was out of the necessity of her star image not being too
challenging to the mainstream.
