Supplemental Post #6 - Madison Lorenz

One thing that makes me extremely happy to see in any business is when women lift up other women. Instead of making romantic relationships, jobs, and looks all about competition, women should be supporting one another and realizing that there is enough success to go around. One of the conversations that I had among a group of my friends was about Nicki Minaj and her seemingly frequent "putting-down" of other women. Minaj has not been one to shy away from publicly calling out other women in the entertainment industry and/or writing passive aggressive lyrics directed toward another female. When looking at an article from 2017 in People (attached below), it is clear that Nicki has had "beef" with many celebrities, specifically other females. Even more recently, the buzz is between Nicki and fellow female rapper Cardi B. Both from New York and both extremely talented, it wouldn't be a surprise if Nicki viewed Cardi as a potential threat to her career. After reading a few other articles, it seems that this feud between Nicki and Cardi is still in question and that they have never claimed to have any problems with each other. However, listeners speculate that there could be some beef under the radar due to lyrics on each of their tracks that seemed to be geared towards one another.
A little over two weeks ago, Cardi B released her first album which received great recognition. Not even a week later, Nicki released two new singles. Coincidence? I asked my friends what they thought and across the board, they all believed that the timing of Nicki's drop had something to do with attempting to steal the spotlight from Cardi's successful new album. One of my friends went on to explain that she's noticed that any time a female rapper starts to gain recognition, she released a song with questionable lyrics and/or seems to start some sort of feud out of jealousy.
In an industry where there are far less successful female rappers than there are male rappers, I feel that it would be smart for these few female rappers to stick together and support one another rather than view each other as threatening competition.
