Supplemental Post #5: Taking the Tour

This weekend, my family came out to visit, so we thought it would be fun to take a Hop-On Hop-Off tour. Having taken these tours before in other cities around the world, I was interested to see what this tour was like. To my surprise, a lot of the tour spent time amping up the idea of capturing pictures with "Stars" and Celebrities wherever we went. In fact, the majority of the facts seemed to be about Brad Pitt, and how he had worked as a Chicken mascot at an El Pollo Loco, had been 'kidnapped' by Jackass outside of Pink's Hotdogs, etc. The tour audio kept on hammering in that we should try to get out and get images with certain stars, telling us where they usually eat, as well as advising us to take more tours that look at the stars homes.
As the main focus of this course has been about Stars, I immediately started to think about how much Stars are valued as a commodity, so much so that they are a central part of a tour that tourists from all over the world go on when they come to Los Angeles. The almost-obsessive behavior with documenting and informing people about where to track stars, almost as if they are an animal you can capture (or Pokemon, if you still play that game), only reminds me about what we have learned in class: how Star's personal lives come to mean a lot to people, as they are constantly on the lookout for more knowledge and information about their role models.
I haven't been on any of the tours of the stars homes, but I was wondering if any of you have, and what that experience was like. Was it interesting, or kind of weird?
