Core Post - Chimezie Metu

I found the readings for this week to be very interesting as well as argumentative in the sense that most of the work took certain stances or made certain statements regarding a topic such as feminism, especially that of Maria Laplace. When we look at an early part of Laplace's writing that basically compares consumerism strategies used in films to the same manner that women are used in films it really forms the basis of an argument that could stem in either direction.

Personally, I am not involved or very familiar with the film industry as many other people in the class might be but reading Laplace's work gives me a platform to really build off of in a way. From what I understood in part of her writing, women in films are portrayed in through a very feminine light with the help of various strategies such as make-up use, etc. and really making it a point to make plays on the femininity of women in order to promote such aspects in the real world. Similar to someone who is watching a television show or a movie and there is some kind of product placement incorporated into a scene, for example two characters on the show are having very detailed dialogue over a bottle of Pepsi, specifically. The intention of the director(s) is to create an urge in the viewer to want to buy a can of Pepsi at some point. I feel that Laplace is making a point to say that women on screen are being used in this same light in order to promote a certain notion within women in the real world that they might believe to be best suited. This could involve stressing certain physical appearances, actions, activities that they participate in, and so much more. Honestly, I never really looked at the situation in that manner but after reading the "Consumerism" section of Laplace's writing I gained a new perspective on the way that films and directors might not only try to promote inanimate objects but also use the screen time of certain people on screen to promote a notion that they might believe to be the most ideal, especially when it comes to women.
