Supplemental Post 2

This morning I read that Scarlett Johansson demanded James Franco return his Time's Up pin at the 2018 Women's March. And then, I read the comments section. Many were accusing Johansson of being a hypocrite for both working with Woody Allen on many occasions and taking roles that whitewashed people of color. One of my goals in deconstructing the world is remembering binaries and dichotomies are untrue. Does Johansson's past discount or negate her comments/demands at the march? I don't know. On the one hand, it seems unfair to hold celebrities to high and unreasonable standards. They are going to fuck up like everyone else. And it is possible for her to both take whitewashing roles and feel passionately against sexual assault. However, on the other hand, when celebrities say and do things that are inconsistent or conflict with one another, it makes it harder to figure out where they genuinely stand. I guess for me personally, I evaluate celebrities as such: did they apologize for and recognize their mistake? Did they do better moving forward? And did they put their money where their mouth is? At the very least, I'm glad she called out James Franco, and it was great to see so many celebrities come out in support of women.
