This was my first time seeing All About Eve. Before viewing it in class I had only ever heard of the film, and knew that Bette Davis starred in it. I knew nothing of the plot or any of the film's details. However, after watching the film, I thought about the concept of "persona," particularly as it relates to Bette Davis. Based on what I know, or what I think I know, about Bette Davis, I was convinced that I would find her to be the "villain" of the film. I was totally surprised to find myself sympathizing with Margo. Dyer points out in Stars that although Eve is "plain and simple," and Margo is "overblown and monstrous," looks can be deceiving. Through the mise en scène and costuming, I came to these conclusions. But we soon learn that Eve is plotting to essentially "steal" Eve's career. I liked that I sympathized with Margo. I wanted to like Margo, so it was neat that the film didn't meat my expectations, and actually gave me what I secretly wanted. Aside from that, I thought it was an excellent film. Bette Davis is a legend and I will make it a point to watch more of her films in the future.
